ESA and school choice by state

Eighteen US states run Education Savings Accounts. Find yours below. No ESA can pay Units yet. Arizona is first, and a 529 works today.

Can an ESA pay for Units?

Not yet. Arizona is where we're starting, and we're working through its provider registration now.

Arizona registers providers directly. There is no approved-vendor list and no accreditation review. Once that registration clears, an Arizona family can put ESA funds toward the $3,000 annual online learning program, one student for one year, paid through ClassWallet. We are not registered and not accepting ESA money in any state today.

The $1,000 official OSSD credit fee is not ESA-eligible. It goes to an inspected Ontario partner school, so it is billed separately and never appears on an ESA invoice.

A 529 plan works right now, with no approval process. Since July 2025, federal 529 withdrawals cover K-12 curriculum, online educational materials, and educational classes outside the home. The 2026 cap is $20,000 per beneficiary. We issue an itemized invoice for that distribution.

Talk to a tax professional before you withdraw. IRS guidance is unsettled for some homeschool-only cases, and your state's tax rules may differ.

What an ESA is

An ESA is state money in a spending account. You apply, then spend it on approved costs such as private-school tuition, curriculum, and online learning programs. Use the official link on your state's card.

A scholarship or voucher pays tuition at a participating school. A tax credit means you apply to a scholarship group or claim it on your taxes. Being eligible to apply is not the same as getting funded. Caps and waitlists are common.

Ontario and Canada

Ontario has no ESA and no voucher. None of the money on this page reaches an Ontario family, and nothing we are doing in Arizona changes that. Units students pay $1,000 when they request an official OSSD credit. If that is a barrier, see scholarships and referral credit.
